Punta Cana - A captivating, Caribbean and Latin-fused favourite
"Unspoilt sugar sand beaches, tropical landscapes and colourful coral reef await you at this Caribbean and Latin-fused favourite."The Dominican Republic is a seductive mix of Latin American flavour and Caribbean colour. Vibrancy, natural beauty and unbelievable beaches make the island an intoxicating place that you'll find difficult to leave. In contrast to the bustle of the north, the only decision you'll have to make along the south and east coasts is whether you want to spend your day strolling along the wide white sands of this superb coastline, unwinding under the whispering palms leaves, or being pampered at your hotel. The capital, Santo Domingo, is a town full of vitality and its roots lay in two of the most rhythmic and vibrant cultures on earth, Latin American and Caribbean. Brimming with history, there are enough colonial sites, architecture and museums to keep you going all holiday. Away from the urban hubbub there is an array of spellbinding beaches to be found. Fine, snow-white sands, characterise this coastline and you’ll have the luxury of choosing between high-class resorts such as Punta Cana and the peace of Bavaro and Bayahibe.
Beaches
The Caribbean Sea softly laps the south of the island and is so clear you can see the sun dancing on the sandy seabed. Boca Chica has some fantastic beaches but can get rather busy during the holiday season. Those wishing to escape the crowds should head for the quieter resorts of Barahona and Bavaro with their sugar-white sands - an irresistible temptation.
Shopping
Caribbean markets are always a colourful thrill and you'll be able to find plenty of stalls selling local produce in Santa Domingo. Brightly-coloured local art is for sale at the markets, on the beaches, in the shops or at the hotels. Be sure to distinguish between imitation Haitian pictures, which can be colourful but not worth much, and original work by Dominican artists. Fresh coffee grown on the mountain slopes is great value, and can be bought everywhere.
Eating out
The mouth-watering cuisine here is an interesting mix of Caribbean and Latin American that mimics the cultural fusion of the Dominican Republic. Rice, kidney beans and fish are a staple of dishes such as
el moro which combines them in a satisfying stew. Sweet tasting and deliciously refreshing tropical fruits, including juicy pineapple, aromatic coconut and fresh mango, are mixed into some spectacular rum-based cocktails and it wouldn't be a proper Caribbean holiday without a barbecue on the beach - hot chicken and a cold
Presidente beer as the sun sinks into the distant horizon. Simply perfect.
Nightlife
Western-style discos and bars can be found in the capital, Santa Domingo and in some of the larger resorts. However if you want to sample the lively local scene of rumba, salsa, meringue and reggae you'll find plenty of options in most resorts and towns. Jive and grind in Caribbean style or flick your heels to a Latino beat.

Step back in time to follow in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus around the city's colonial zone and get a taste of what life must have been like in those first days of the New World. Photograph the magnificent Columbus lighthouse where the great man's remains are under constant guard. Visit the first cathedral and walk down the first street in the Americas, and shop in the market - probably the cheapest place to buy souvenirs, but remember to haggle!
