18.02.2005 The UK’s leading travel company Thomson is expanding its low fares flight programme with new flight services to Barcelona.
Thomsonfly.com, the company’s low fares airline started flights to Barcelona last weekend from Coventry Airport, which TUI operates in the Heart of England. The new route is part of TUI’s expansion into the low fares flight sector which commenced when Thomson launched low fares flights from Coventry in March 2004.
During February and March Thomsonfly.com will operate flights five days a week increasing to a daily service from April. Flights to Coventry start from only €12.99 one way excluding taxes and charges.
In 2004 Thomsonfly.com carried over 300,000 sector passengers to Spanish destinations including mainland Malaga and Valencia in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Initially operating from one UK base Thomsonfly.com will be flying from two additional bases by the summer - flights will start from Bournemouth Airport and Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield in March and April respectively. Thomsonfly.com has a fleet of four aircraft which will be more than doubled to nine for the summer months.
Thomson is the UK’s largest travel company and brings over 2 million customers to the Spanish mainland and an additional 2 million to the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands each year, making it the largest inbound travel company for UK holidaymakers.
At a press conference today at Barcelona Airport Managing Director for TUI UK Peter Rothwell talked about the growing independent holiday sector, the package holiday market and Thomson’s plans for the future.
Peter said: “The UK holiday market has seen a great deals of change over recent years and this is predicted to continue into the future. The package holiday market is still the largest UK holiday sector, however the package holiday market is quite static and has not seen the significant growth in recent years. Thomson leads the UK travel market with its quality of product and service and is evolving and innovating to provide customers with the holidays they want and maximise revenue.”
